Seismic Protection for the South Island

 Speaker: Dr. Garry Rogers

Emeritus Research Scientist

Geological Survey of Canada, Pacific Geoscience Centre, North Saanich

Bio: Garry specializes in earthquake and tsunami studies.  From 1999-2014 he served on the Standing Committee on Earthquake Design which is responsible for earthquake resistant provisions in the National Building Code, and from 2006 to 2015 represented Canada on the UNESCO Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Pacific Tsunami Warning System.  Dr. Rogers is also an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria, where he was Principal Investigator for establishing the offshore seismograph network attached to Ocean Networks Canada’s underwater NEPTUNE Cabled Observatory.

ABSTRACT:  Vancouver Island is along the “Pacific Rim of Fire”, one of the most active seismic areas in the world.  Although we regularly get smaller quakes, large earthquakes have happened in the past and will undoubtedly happen in the future. The new BC Building Code was released on December 10 and contains updated seismic hazard assessments for BC cities adopted from the 2015 National Building Code. Garry will discuss reasons for the seismic hazard in our region and the changes to the ground motion design values in the new BC Building Code.  Who knows what earthquakes, local or international, may happen prior to Garry’s talk that could be of local interest. For example, the last time he spoke to the VIES he was able to specifically talk about The February 22, 2011 M6.2 Christchurch, New Zealand Quake and the recovery efforts one year later which has great relevance to the Island’s need for more focused preparation. Garry may also touch on any recent earthquakes that might happen before March that have relevance to the South Island.
