About Us

Mission:

We are a general engineering society which supports engineering education, promotes the advancement and application of engineering knowledge for the betterment of Vancouver Island, it’s ecology, economy, and quality of life and recognizes excellence in engineering practice.

Activities:

  1. Operate a monthly lunch speaker series of meetings to bring together engineers and other interested parties to promote and advance the benefit of advances in engineering and science;
  2. To support undergraduate engineers at UVIC through scholarship and award programs;
  3. To support research at UVIC Faculty of Engineering through support for new programs and individual mentoring as requested;
  4. To collaborate with affiliated engineering organizations in the promotion of engineering events and outreach initiatives

History:

Prior to 1990, the EIC had regional chapters of which Victoria was the most active.  After this time EIC switched to supporting discipline specific affiliates.  The Victoria EIC Chapter created an independent Society which subsequently voted to become a chapter of the Canadian Society of Senior Engineers (CSSE).  During this time, the Engineering Associates (EA) was formed at UVIC to assist the Dean and faculty as requested at a time when the faculty was quite small. In 2013, this group joined the CSSE Chapter resulting in the current amalgamation. The Vancouver Island Branch of the EIC and CSSE remain an affiliate of the EIC.  The society is rebranding locally as the Vancouver Island Engineering Society to reflect a broader outreach to the engineering community with joint activities and events with affiliated organizations.  In addition, there is a new emphasis on advancing the role of engineering in the development of Vancouver Island’s commercial activities and environmental protection.

Membership:

The VIES is a not-for-profit society that is purely driven by volunteer support.  The primary contact list is established through registration on the web site and may be freely subscribed to or unsubscribed from at any time.  Each year an AGM is held (usually in May or June) to review the year’s activities and elect a new executive and board.  For the purpose of operating the society, those who attend the AGM are considered voting members and during the year the Board members are empowered to make decisions on behalf of the society. Each year a report is submitted to the BC Societies Registry office as required by the BC Societies Act.

Those who are active members of the CSSE may participate on the CSSE board, committees, working groups and attend the AGM.  Participation in the CSSE provides the VIES with a national reach through chapters across the country and the personal network of other CSSE members.  The VIES acting as the regional CSSE Chapter provides an annual report for the CSSE AGM which is also published in the CSSE newsletter nationally.

EVENTS

Meetings are held on the first Friday of each month (except when conflicted with holidays) at the upper lounge of the Oak Bay Recreational Centre unless otherwise indicated.  These meetings are open to all interested individuals in the community but are intended to be of special interest to the engineering community. The VIES may from time to time develop special events with other partners in the community which will be promoted through the event calendar.  In collaboration with the Victoria Chapter of APEGBC, we will include in the calendar meetings from affiliated engineering organizations to provide a monthly overview of local engineering activities.
